BSA Summer Camp 2004

04 JUL 04

This year's Boy Scout Summer Camp took place at Thunder Scout Reservation in Molena, GA. We went down on Sunday June 27th and returned July 3rd. They boys spent the week at Utica camp site. While there they worked hard on earning their First Aid, Swimming, Finger Printing, and Basketry Merit Badges. Other Buckskin activities included Orienteering:a very tough one mile course through the woods, Duck Day: tug-o-war - stone throw - canoe pull, rifle range, conservation projects, and other competitions.

The food at the dining hall was actually quite good. The staff there was a little bit crazy, but made things fun. "The pandas are coming, the pandas are coming!" Tunes memorized a nickname for almost all of the scouts, and Flake kept things going at the assembly before meals. We all think Camp Director, Flake needed to go into the lake, but this unfortunately did not happen. "And the smoke goes up the chimney just the same...just the same!"

Senior Patrol Leader, Wes York worked very hard on teaching the boys scout "ethics". They can now "Fall In" which is get into and walk in a straight line, "Police Line" which consists of collecting trash, "Faux Pas" this is a demerit system that imparts a penalty of 20 sit-ups or push-ups.

Conservation projects included path improvements at the Utica site and most notable was the restoration of the stairs at the Shotgun Range. The boys moved a 2/3 full trailer load of stones and pea gravel onto a 100 foot section of stairs that lead up to the Shotgun Range! It was quite a feat! One of the Camp Directors was so impressed that he made a generous cash donation to help the boys get free ice cream at Dairy Queen on the trip home!

Oh yeah, did we mention that the boys did a whole lot of walking?!

Many of the boys purchased hammocks at the Trading Post. These wound up in a cluster amongst the trees affectionately known as "Hammockville". There were several nights where the boys slept all night in their hammocks - even in the light rain!

Here is a camp song that Phillip, Stephen and the rest of the boys made up one afternoon.

The boys worked really hard all week to earn points and earned the Honor Unit award! Not bad for a first year troop! They collected trash, including bottles, group activities like Duck Day competitions, conservation projects, volleyball/basketball tournaments and chess matches where our very own Glenn made it to the semi-finals!

The week spent at Camp Thunder was a great success! Thanks to all of our leaders and parents for giving sacrificially of their time and resources to make a difference in our boys lives!
